Ridgefield’s Rich History

The sight of what is now the town of Ridgefield has been occupied for at least 450 years. Before settlers came from the east, the region was home to a large and prosperous village of Cathlapotle. It was at Cathlapotle that the Lewis and Clark expedition came down from the rugged cascades to find a willing and convivial band of Native Americans from the Chinook tribe to trade with. The provisions, hospitality, and guidance provided by the Chinook helped sustain the Lewis and Clark expedition on the final leg of their journey to the great Pacific. After reaching their ocean goal, the expedition returned to trade with the Chinook before returning to Washington, D.C. The town grew as migrants tilled the rich soil to farm apples, potatoes, and other crops.

Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge

One of the biggest attractions in the region is the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, comprising over 5,000 acres of pristine marshland, grass fields, and gently sloping woodland hills. The refuge offers opportunities for hiking, paddling, and especially wildlife viewing. It is a major stopover for migratory waterfowl using the Pacific flyway. In fact, in William Clark’s journal of his historic expedition, he remarks with dismay that the swans, geese, and ducks were present in such large numbers that they kept him up all night long with their racket. The refuge attracts large populations of birders every year from all parts of the country and indeed the world.

Top Schools

The Ridgefield School District is consistently excellent, with reading, writing, and math scores regularly landing in the 80th and even 90th percentiles statewide. Ridgefield High School is among the top public high schools in the state. Its mascot, “The Spudders,” is a nod to the region’s potato farming past.

Things to Do

Ridgefield, though small, has plenty of activities to keep you occupied. The nearby Sunlight Supply Amphitheatre is the largest outdoor arena in the Portland metropolitan area, and it hosts big-name bands year-round. The Clark County Fair is also held annually in Ridgefield.
